Yesterday we met with Caleb’s doctor and got the “all clear” to go home!!!! We were all so happy about the good news and there were hugs all around. It’s a win for us and a win for Caleb’s whole care team! His numbers are strong enough to fly and we’ll have a blood test done at home in a few weeks to check counts again.
We are flying home TOMORROW (Sunday) so packing is in full swing. My stepmom found a victim willing to drive our fully packed van all the way to Florida. Ha ha just kidding… Alex is a really sweet guy that was willing to help us out, so he flew to Memphis, helped us pack the van, and is now on his way back to our house so my van will be there tomorrow when we get home. Thanks Alex! It was great to meet you and the kids loved you too!
So, that’s it. Hard to believe tomorrow we say goodbye to our apartment, and to Memphis as our home. But we’ll be back for many visits the first being in early October so we won’t be gone too long. Caleb’s treatment isn’t completely over. He will continue 6 rounds of oral chemo at home. Each round will be 28 days. The first 7 days of each round is when he will take the oral chemo. This means his counts will still be dropping and recovering through the next 6 months. We will have to use caution at certain times with visitors, activities, etc but we’ll be monitoring counts closely at home with our oncologist in Tampa.
We are beyond excited but when we left St. Jude yesterday it almost didn’t feel real. A lot about this experience maybe never felt real. I still can’t believe that all this happened to us, and to Caleb. I’m still processing all we have been through. I still worry about what is to come, but for right now we can for sure celebrate that Caleb is NED (no evidence of disease) and with his aggressive type of cancer that is the best classification you can get!!
We are going to see the Lion Ling and then spending our evening at a Memphis 901 FC soccer game. It will be a perfect way to spend our last evening here and I know the kids will have so much fun. Then we wake up tomorrow and fly home!!!
